How to do a typewriter effect in Premiere Pro.

Step 1

Add a clip and a text layer to the timeline respectively.

Create a cursor icon: Right-click on the project panel > New Item > Black Video > drag the black video above the text clip on the timeline and make sure it matches the text clip's length > with the black video selected, go to Effect Controls > uncheck Uniform Scale > increase the Scale Width to 1.5 > decrease the Scale Height until the cursor is just a bit higher than the text's height > Drag the Position value to the left to move the cursor to the start of your text > adjust the Position's second value, so the cursor is more central to the text.

Step 3

Animate the text: Head to Effects panel > enter Liner Wipe into the search bar > drag the Linear Wipe effect into the text clip on the timeline > select the text clip and go back to Effect Controls > move the playhead to the beginning of the clip > click the Stopwatch next to Transition Completion to create the first keyframe > set Transition Completion to 100% > move the playhead to around halfway of your text clip and set Completion to 0%, which will create the ending keyframe. > set Wide Angle to 270%. So the text moves from the left to the right. You may drag the second keyframe closer to the first keyframe to adjust the speed of the typewriter text effect animation.

Step 4

Animate the cursor: Select the black video clip on the timeline > go to Effect Controls and move the playhead at the start of the clip > click the Stopwatch next to the Position to create the first keyframe > move the playhead to when the text finishes its reveal > drag the Position's first value to the right until the black cursor is a little behind your text, which will automatically create the second keyframe.

Step 5

Make the cursor match up with the text wipe: go back to Effect Controls > drag the Position's first value to ensure the cursor goes neither too earlier nor too far behind the text reveal.

Step 6

Make the cursor blinks for a more realistic typewriter effect: Drag the black clip a bit longer before the text clip > cut the black video clip right where it aligns with the text clip > Cut the extended black video clip every 3 or 4 frames > delete every other cutout chunk of the black video. Now, the cursor shall blink before typing > use the same way to make the cursor blinks after the text finishes its reveal.
